Board of Directors

 

 C. Channing Frykman, M.D., F.A.A.P. (Chair) has been a board member since November 2006. She is from Texas and moved to Los Angeles in 2004. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas (UTSW). She completed her pediatric internship and residency at the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas-UTSW. Dr. Channing received her Board Certification in 1998 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has worked in private practice and most recently at the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) as a primary care provider and at LACHC as a volunteer pediatrician. She also serves the community through her Matthew 25 Ministry. Her passion is seeing God bring health and wholeness in body, mind, and spirit for the youth of our nation and the “least of these”. She is actively involved in the Christian Medical & Dental Associations where she serves as a faculty advisor with her spouse and coordinator for the quarterly Judeo-Christian Bioethics Symposia at UCLA. She and her husband Phil have adopted twin sons, and a daughter. They worship at The Church on the Way in Van Nuys, California. She enjoys time with family and friends, outdoor recreation, travel, and creative projects.

 

Edward Seungse Lee (Vice-Chair) has served on the Board since its inception in 2004, including term as a Chair. He was born in South Korea and moved to Los Angeles when he was 7 years old. He resided in Los Angeles and served as a volunteer at the Los Angeles Christian Health Centers before moving to attend Stanford University. After college, he bgan working for Silicon Valley Christian Health Alliance, a Christian free clinic for homeless and poor immigrants, as Development and Volunteer Coordinator for two years. During that time, he also served as intern staff for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He then moved back to Los Angeles to attend David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles as part of the Charles Drew University-UCLA Urban Underserved Program. He attends Garden Christian Fellowship in Chatsworth. He enjoys being active, playing basketball, running and reading in his spare time. For this next year, he is moving to Boston to enroll in a Masters in Public Health program at Harvard University prior to finishing his last year in medical school.  

 

Lisa Proft, Esq. (Vice-Chair) has been a Board Member since July 2008. She is a native Californian who grew up in Los Angeles. She attended Cal State Dominguez Hills as a Business major and after a short career in Advertising, heard God's call to become an attorney. She graduated West Los Angeles School of Law and passed the State Bar of California in 1997. She works for the County of Los Angeles as a Probate Attorney. She is involved in various community-based committees. Lisa and her family attend The Church on the Way, where they serve in children's' ministries, Home Group ministries, the School of Pastoral Nurture, Intercessory Prayer ministries among others. Lisa and her husband Patrick have two boys. In addition to community and church ministries, Lisa and Pat are very involved in various martial arts.  

 

Kristy Bae, D.D.S. (Secretary) has been a board member of LACHC since 2008. She was born in Seoul, Korea and her family immigrated to Los Angeles when she was thirteen years old. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Biological Sciences major and received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Southern California School Of Dentistry in 1995. She practices general dentistry at the Miracle Smile Dentistry in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles and regularly volunteers in the LACHC dental clinic. She is actively involved on the board of the Korean American Christian Dental Mission as well as numerous other professional and ministry organizations. Kristy attends Young Nak Celebration Church where she serves as a deacon overseeing membership ministry. She strives to use her profession to give glory to God in our community and internationally in various missions’ works including serving as a teacher and dentist in China, Kyrgyzstan, and Mexico. She enjoys spending time with her family especially her four nephews and nieces.  

 

John J. Hong, M.D., M.B.A. (Treasurer) has been on the LACHC board since 2007. He earned his M.D. at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine in Florida, and completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals & Pritzker School of Medicine, and obtained certification in the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy while earning a M.B.A. at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Dr. Hong is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. He serves on the board of directors at the Physicians Hospital of Murrieta, the Temecula CA Endoscopy ASC, and the Korean-American Missions Health Council. He is the CEO of American Cardiac Education Specialists. He has served on multiple medical missions’ trips to Mongolia, Peru, Belize, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Mexico. Dr. Hong is an ordained deacon and leader/founder of the Healthcare Professionals Ministry (HPM) at the Young Nak Celebration Church of Los Angeles. He is an active member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Christian Medical & Dental Association. Dr. Hong is a partner/owner of the Temecula Valley Digestive Disease Consultants, AMC. He is married and has 4 children, and enjoys spending time with his family and friends, playing sports, martial arts, and investing in real estate.    

 

Juan Ascencion became a LACHC board member in June 2009. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and has lived in Los Angeles since 1989. He attended California State University at Los Angeles and obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering. He has worked for the University of California at Los Angeles and the Rand Corporation and currently works for O’Melveny and Myers as a Software Developer. He attends Calvary Chapel Downey, and previously taught in the Spanish ministry at Calvary Chapel Los Feliz. Juan has been involved in several mission trips including China, Cuba, Mexico and the Inner city. He and his wife have twins. He enjoys spending time with family and friends and loves to travel.  

 

Sofia Arellano Burns joined our Board in April 2009. She is the Chair of the Board’s Audit Committee. She was born in Ecuador and has lived in Los Angeles since 1978. She attended California State University- Long Beach. She was previously a Controller at Community Health Alliance of Pasadena (CHAP) and currently the CFO at the New Image Emergency Shelter for the Homeless. She serves on the Membership Drive Committee for the Fundacion Amigos Latinos Unidos (FALU) and is a Member-at-Large for the Ceritos Aquatic Club. She attends Saint Cyprian Catholic Church. Sofia is married with three children, two sons and a daughter. She enjoys reading, dancing, listening to all kinds of music, and spending time with friends.  

 

Stephen Kennedy, M.B.A., M.Div became a board member in September 2009, and is a member of the Finance Committee. Steve has fourteen years of nonprofit accounting experience. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Wisconsin, an MBA at Columbia University, and a Master of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary. He was certified as a CPA in the State of Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, Steve worked for three years as a Staff Auditor with Arthur Young & Company and for four years as Controller of a small manufacturing company. In New York City, Steve worked in higher education where he served as Controller at Marymount Manhattan College for two years and Associate Vice President & Treasurer and Controller of The New School for eight years. For the past three years, Steve has worked as the Chief Financial Officer of the Los Angeles Mission, Inc. He also serves as an ordained priest at St. David’s Anglican Church in North Hollywood. In his spare time, he enjoys running, travel, movies, theater, reading and time with friends.  

 

Joseph West, Esq. joined the LACHC Board in July 2008. He grew up in Alaska and has lived in Los Angeles since 1997. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Major in Economics. He received his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 2001. He has a private practice law firm in Los Angeles that focuses on personal injury, real estate litigation, and bad faith insurance. He is a member of the State Bar of California and Los Angeles County Bar Association. He has also served as a Pro Bono Mediator for the Los Angeles County Superior Court ADR Program and Public Counsel Community Development Project Volunteer. His family worships at The Church on The Way in Van Nuys, California. He and his wife Patricia have two adopted sons. He enjoys spending time with family, hiking, and skiing.  

 

Chaplain Bridget Wilson became a member of the board in March 2009. She grew up in Marietta, Georgia and has lived in Los Angeles since graduating High School in June of 1978. She achieved Nursing Assistant and Front Office certificates and went on to receive an AA at Compton College. Chaplain Bridget attended the University of Arizona and majored in Human Services and Residential Rehabilitation, Women’s Specialists and Substance Abuse Counselor. Chaplain Bridget obtained Ministerial credentials through the Pentecostal Assembly’s, and taught for 10 years at Christian Education West Adams Foursquare Church. She has studied at the Moody Bible Institute. She was the Chairperson for the Compton Area Steering Committee, and serves as Chair of the Consumer Advisory Council at the Los Angeles Christian Health Centers. Chaplain Bridget is currently the Transition Work Start Chaplain at the Anne Douglas Center for Women and Children, a ministry of the Los Angeles Mission. She worships at Mt. Zion N.T. Assembly Church, where she is involved in the Intercessory Prayer/Evangelism ministry with her husband of 23 years. She has 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. She enjoys spending time with her family, and seeing the bigger picture come to pass in the Community and The Kingdom.
